Damit unterscheidet sich sein Werk deutlich von zahlreichen anderen BPM-Veröffentlichungen, die Prozessoptimierungen alleine auf IT-Verbesserung reduzieren. Kapitel 1 beschäftigt sich mit der Strategischen Prozessorganisation. Hierunter versteht FISCHERMANNS ein Konzept, bei dem die Unternehmensprozesse identifiziert und klar auf die Markt- und Wettbewerbsstrategien ausgerichtet werden. Dabei gibt er zahlreiche konkrete Entscheidungshilfen, wann unternehmensübergreifende Prozessvisionen wie beispielsweise Shared Service Center oder Business Process Outsourcing tatsächlich strategiekonform greifen. Auch wird das Geheimnis gelüftet, was sich hinter dem Schlagwort prozessorientierte Aufbauorganisation wirklich verbirgt und wann diese Organisationsform sinnvoll ist. Die Frage nach Kernprozessen erregt in Unternehmen die Gemüter. Jeder Bereich findet seine zu verantwortenden Prozesse besonders wichtig. Mit Techniken wie der Prozessportfolioanalyse liefert das Werk konkrete Handlungsanleitungen, Prozesse zu priorisieren und Kernprozesse zu identifizieren.

In Kapitel 2 steigt das Praxishandbuch in die Tiefen der Modellierung, Analyse und Gestaltung einzelner Prozesse ein. Hier wird die derzeit populäre Notation BPMN genauso ausführlich behandelt wie die bereits seit längerem etablierten Modellierungsstandards Folgeplan und EPK. Anhand des ibo-Doku-Rasters werden auch zahlreiche weitere Diagrammtypen wie Swimlane, SIPOC, Makigami oder Wertstrom-Diagramm eingeordnet und erläutert. In anderen Publikationen wird viel von Prozesszielen wie Qualität, Kosten und Zeit in der Praxis geredet, selten finden sich aber Ansätze, wie diese Kennzahlen konkret ermittelt werden. Hier ist das anders. Im Buch werden mit der Variantenzahl und dem First Pass Yield Berechnungsverfahren aufgezeigt, mit deren Hilfe man die Qualität von Prozessen beziffern kann. Auch die genaue Berechnung der Durchlaufzeit hilft, die Liegezeit als entscheidenden Zeitfresser zu entlarven. Ausführlich werden die verschiedenen Ansätze der im Dienstleistungsbereich zunehmend wichtiger werdenden Prozesskostenrechnung dargestellt. Die Prozessziele sind dann auch die Maßstäbe dafür, welche der dargestellten prozessualen, technischen und personellen Gestaltungsansätze welche Prozessverbesserungen bringen.

Prozesse zu gestalten ist brotlose Kunst, wenn man es im Anschluss nicht schafft, die Veränderungen in der täglichen Praxis zu leben. Mit der Kontinuierlichen Prozessoptimierung stellt der Autor in Kapitel 3 eine Methode und Techniken vor, wie man die vereinbarten Prozesskennzahlen aus den laufenden Abläufen permanent ermitteln und einhalten kann. Dabei schätzt FISCHERMANNS realistisch ab, welche der momentan diskutierten Messverfahren tatsächlich sinnvoll sind. So lohnt sich beispielsweise das echtzeitbasierte Prozessmonitoring nur für automatisierte Routineprozesse. Diese decken jedoch in Unternehmen in der Regel nur 20 Prozent des gesamten Prozessvolumens ab. Für alle anderen, nur teilweise technisch unterstützten Prozesse liefert das Praxishandbuch alternative Erhebungstechniken wie das Multi-Moment-Monitoring oder den elektronischen Laufzettel.
